James Michael was born in Odessa, Texas, on January 17, 1972, to James (Jimmy) Alfred and Nancy (Kuykendall) Jacobson.

He was a member of Pike Kappa Alpha.

Survivors include his mother, Nancy Jacobson of Whitesboro, Texas; his sister, Brandy Thomas-Hinton and husband, Jeffrey, of Sherman, Texas; nephews, Kolton James Hinton of Sherman, Texas, and Brayden Howard Hinton of Sherman, Texas; children, C. J. Martin of Nederland, Texas, and Cayleah Martin of College Station, Texas; his maternal grandmother, Peggy Henegar of May, Texas; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, James (Jimmy) Alfred Thomas.
